The researcher at the Indian Institution Of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, developed fluorescent carbon nanodots for simulation detection and destruction of cancer cells.
The 10-9 meter carbon materials that can serve as diagnostic and therapeutic agents for cancer that have been removed from the leaves of the rosy periwinkle plant.
“Such events of real-time image-guided anticancer therapy by a single open a new paradigm in the field of anti-cancer therapy. With these nano-materials, we can identify the cancer cells and track them by an imaging system simultaneously as the cells themselves are being eradicated in a precise surgical strike” said by P Gopinath, the lead of the team.
“We are planning next stage animal studies for future evaluation of these nano-materials in oncological applications, for both diagnostic and treatment,” he also added.
The researchers of IIT has been helped by the Science and Engineering Researcher Board (SERB) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Union Minister of Science and Technology.
“The identification of cancer cells and their destruction have been continuing challenges in the field of oncology and cancer drug research for many decades. In the past few years, nanotechnology has emerged as one of the most promising areas in cancer diagnostics and treatment and nanomaterials – materials having dimensions in the nanometers (10-9m) range- are being increasingly studied as agents in molecular tumor imaging, molecular diagnosis and targeted therapy”, said by Gopinath.
